Vacation July 2008

Anthony and Katrina’s Great Louisiana Adventure!

Note: I have pictures for July 5 and 6th, but I hit my limit, so I’ll have to post them on August 1st – that is what happens when you (meaning me) are a camera freak!!

July 5, 2008

I woke with the realization that today was the day Anthony & Katrina would be headed south to Louisiana; Anthony home on leave and Katrina visiting for the first time ever. Apparently my excitement level was not the only one growing for at 8:30 I received the first of multiple calls from number 1 son giving me their current location and ETA in Houma.

The GPS was remarkably accurate for the last ETA I received from Number 1 was 6:05 and that pretty little red Mazda 6 pulled into the driveway at 6:09. Charles and I went for the hugs while an ecstatic Tar Baby danced and walked around quite like the dog named “Will Power”! We had the “Welcome Home” signs hung for both our LCPL (ex PFC, ex PVT) as well as Katrina. I must say our neighbors looked at the sign saying “Welcome Home Anthony and Katrina” with a bit of concern. I assured them that though this Katrina was a whirlwind, she would not cause the damage the storm with the same name caused; least-wise I hope not (hehehehe)! Anthony’s neighborhood friend appeared in just a couple of minutes having been alerted to the fact that “Ferg” was back. Chico was shortly followed by Dalton and Sean appearing quickly to welcome home the Marine and to “gawk’ at the pretty little girl he brought with him!

Although they were tired, their bellies were empty and Anthony had been having serious cravings for “Raising Canes” (for those unfamiliar with this restaurant with local origins – here is some real neat information: http://209.240.145.143/OurHistory.pdf)

When we returned home I gave them both T-shirts I had made celebrating our March vacation in North Carolina. After a brief “discussion” over who got the bed and who got the futon we ALL retired, exhausted to say the least. As I settled into the comfort of my bed I lifted a grateful prayer once again to the Lord thanking Him for filling our lives with the joy of an amazing son and his beautiful young lady.

July 6, 2008

Although I woke early our house remained quiet except for an occasional snore for quite a while. I took the opportunity to have a cup of coffee in the garden relaxing amongst the birds and critters. Other than sunset, there is no time where I feel the very real presence of God than in the morning in my garden. I never cease to hear in my hearts ear the plaintive words of “In the Garden” Breakfast at I-Hop can NOT be beat – blueberry pancakes filled my plate while the rest of the family feasted on an assortment of goodies.

Still tired from our camping trip and the young peoples 15 hour journey we opted for a Sunday afternoon movie. Anthony’s child-hood buddy Mitchell met us for a matinee showing of Hancock. I must say that except for the language I totally enjoyed Will Smith’s latest July hit. Once again there were a lot of surprises AND underlying messages in this hugely entertaining movie. Treat yourself – go see it and you’ll understand how even now the inner joke between us is “cuckoo” and “good job!”

On the way to the theater I made it a point to route ourselves by a billboard advertisement for a local restaurant “El Mexicano” to check the hours. It certainly appeared to me that they would be open at 5PM so I made arrangements with “our extended family” to meet for dinner at 7PM. When you count siblings as well as nieces and nephews it is no easy fete to set everything up. Imagine my panic when they failed to answer their phone after opening hours. I simply wanted to arrange for a large gathering but receiving no answer I did a last minute re-arrangement to go to Piñata’s (who, for the record will get my future business!!)

What a reunion it was!!! Everyone that could be there was; sadly my God-child Kayla had a sick baby to stay home with and my nephew David was offshore, but the rest of the clan showed up at 6:45PM. We even got to see that newest little family member Abby. Be sure to check out her pictures – I was able to snap a picture as she puckered!!

We had a wonderful waiter who though a bit “chatty” was VERY efficient and attentive. I can not say enough about the graciousness of the owner Javier. They filled us with the most awesome food and never left us lacking for anything. They catered to our every need before we even asked. One heart-stopping moment of the night came when a grand-nephew, Trey choked badly. I give credit to his quick acting daddy, Bobby, for dislodging the food for the child who was nearly purple!

In addition to the family meeting Katrina, this was our first opportunity to meet Shannon’s new guy – Stevie – he earned lots of extra points with me when I discovered he played in the church band! Good job!! I was also introduced to the term “awkward turtle” – you’ll see Anthony giving me a visual in the pictures. Amazing though how the terms of the younger generation are the same in NC as in LA – guess it’s a result of the internet and TV. But everyone seemed very pleased to meet the newbie’s and I do believe everyone will get along quite well.

We were the last to leave the restaurant and I am sure that they breathed a sigh of relief to be able to close for the night! Charlie and I called it a night but quite a few of the family members went to the bowling alley to play a competition between the “old and the young”. That is why Charlie and I didn’t go; we knew there would be confusion as to which team we should play on! HA!!! We fell into bed upon returning home however I didn’t sleep well until I heard that key in the door. Then trust me – I slept VERY well!

July 7, 2008 http://usmarinemama.spaces.live.com/photos/cns!87AB16D5179E5E4F!7235/

As usual I rose early and much to my surprise found Anthony already awake, amazing what the Marine Corps does for a young mans habits! He and Katrina headed out for a day of “chores”. Well, not all chores for in addition to getting the drivers license, registering to vote and getting the oil changed in the car, they did manage to a few fun things. Like eating (gotta keep the beast satisfied), get a pedicure (well Katrina did anyway) a haircut for Anthony, a movie and some “hang out” with friends time.

They were home in plenty of time for us to make our 7:30PM reservation at Osaka. What an amazing evening it was. Our hibachi grill chef was awesome keeping us completely entertained as we feasted on steak cooked to perfection, shrimp – which were good but a bit of a strong flavor for me, Japanese noodles, veggies, eggs. We were treated to the volcano, the fire, “I love you”, which was actually “You Love I” but we understood, walking shrimp, jumping eggs. Gosh so much more, but I just can’t remember. After telling our waiter that we were celebrating Anthony’s 21st birthday we were treated to an after supper song, dance and ice cream. It was really pretty cool, the staff played their “drums” while singing a song that certainly sounded every bit like “If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands…”. They “coerced” Anthony into dancing to their music and for his efforts he was rewarded with a set of wooden chopsticks in a very nice case. One note on the ice cream, strangely enough it had beans in it which we called red beans and I later discovered they are technically adzuki beans. It was a bit of a taste challenge to begin but I can definitely see where it would grow on you! The celebration ended by them taking a very nice picture of the four of us and presenting it to us upon departure. All in all, it was a very nice evening. Good food, gorgeous décor and most of all, awesome company!! How blessed can one family be??

July 8, 2008 http://usmarinemama.spaces.live.com/photos/cns!87AB16D5179E5E4F!7081/

Happy birthday to Anthony!!! 21 years old – I remember that!! – Well, kinda anyway! So we started the day with my cooking sausage biscuits for number 1. We moved on then to the slide show video I had prepared for him comparing the little boy he was to the man he’d become. If you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to watch it when you feel the urge to say “awwwwwww” It’s a tear-jerker, but in a good sense! He seemed to enjoy it and that is what mattered most. Stop in and watch it when you get a minute. The song “Find Your Wings” by Mark Harris is a prayer in itself and the perfect tribute for a young man turning 21! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RS9TlakbsCg

We picked up Mitchell and headed out to New Orleans. I’m sure the thought was causing great distress to Charlie for he avoids New Orleans like most people would avoid an epidemic of the plague. But with the help of Lady Garmin, we made it into the city with little or no difficulty. We parked by the Jax Brewery building and headed to the ticket office to pick up our tickets for the Natchez Steamboat River Boat Cruise. It had started sprinkling and I attempted to elicit a promise from the ticket lady that she would put a stop to the rain. We had time to kill before the ship loaded so we walked over to the Hard Rock Café. In all our travels I must say, that was the first time I’d ever been inside one, we bought a tiny souvenir guitar and a very necessary umbrella. The rain was becoming quite steady and I sent up a silent prayer for it to stop. We wandered into a long meandering shop across the street and laughed at the shirts and touristy things. It is always an eye-opener to discover how many things we take for granted here in Louisiana that are amazingly intriguing to an outsider. We enjoyed watching Katrina soak it all in.

Of course a trip to the rest-room is necessary when there are none in sight but we used our “ciphering abilities” to figure out that the Jean Lafitte National Park Welcome Center could probably accommodate our needs. I am so very glad we wandered down the alley-way to the center for there was a gorgeous little patio area that seemed to have gathered all the cool air in the city within its confines. What a welcome relief after the humid sticky after rain air! Out next stop was the Bubba Gump Shrimp Factory Store. Anyone who has read my previous blogs knows how much we all love Bubba Gump and just how quickly we fall into his accent. Charlie bought a hat with the logo and I bought a bumper sticker for Dino that said “Mama always said, stupid is as stupid does”. Oh my, words of wisdom!!

Anthony had turned 21 at 12:01 on this day joining Mitchell who turned 21 in June. Like all 21 year olds they wanted to “feel the power” so they wandered into a daiquiri shop where they purchased a drink with alcohol. Totally lost the excitement of the moment when the clerk did not even bother to card them! Darn the luck! Turning 21 is never quite as exciting as you expect.

Mitchell fell in love with a pink shirt that says “Keep laughing – this is your girl-friends shirt”. He argued with himself through several shops before he finally turned around and went back to purchase it. His “self-service” with the garment reacher earned him a dollar off the purchase! And they say, hard work doesn’t pay off!

The bad thing about Charlie not getting lost heading into New Orleans was that we had extra time to kill, but not quite enough to really get involved in anything too much. Soon enough though, it was time to board so we joined the line that was spiraling around the dock. The sounds of calliope music filled the air and it really added a whimsical touch to what was turning out to be a beautiful afternoon. Like any good cruise line, they snapped pictures as we boarded knowing all too well that the pictures would be purchased whether they were good or not!

We thoroughly enjoyed the trip though there were a few disappointments. The food for one was not up to my expectations; the bread pudding was awesome but the jambalaya left a lot to be desired. For what amounted to $10.00 per plate, I would have expected more food and definitely more meat. The red beans and rice were pretty good but again the meat was lacking.

The narrator was very informative but a bit repetitive, though as we were leaving the ship I figured out why…no less than 6 times did he clearly state that the river was 200’ deep in the center yet as we departed the lady in front of me stopped one of the watchmen and asked how deep the river was! Geesh! Pay attention already! We sat in an area where we should have been able to see but with the constant flow of waiters and people, our view of the scenery was disrupted. What we did see was very interesting, be sure to check out the pictures of the historic New Orleans buildings. You’ll note the one water-front building that has a message written on it: “You are Beautiful”. It was put on there by an unknown person following the devastation of Katrina – the storm, not our precious girly…

The ship itself was gorgeous, well built and decorated; in tip top shape structurally as well as cleanliness. It was quite amazing to watch the paddle wheel and know that it was indeed steam powered. The dining room had the most beautiful decorations and I was quite pleased to note a crucifix hanging at the top of each ceiling eave.

We caught the outer band of one rain shower while cruising – not bad enough to cause problems but it was pretty awesome to watch from the deck at a safe distance.

Disembarking deposited us at the photo package area (of course) – the pictures really came out cute. I will always however laugh whenever I look at the group shot. Anthony said that Mitchell looked like the “drunk friend” who jumped into the picture at the last minute. I had to agree and it brings a giggle every time I see it!

Onward to the next destination of the day – Boomtown Casino. The problem with being 21 and have an 18 year old girl friend is that although you can enter the casino, she can’t. And that is how it is with every casino in our area with the exception of Boomtown – I know this because I called EVERY one! Mitchell donned his pink shirt for his first time in a casino. I laughed til I was in tears when I saw his excitement over the casino bus coming to pick us up. Having used the Park-n-Fly service for years we did not give it a 2nd thought but Mitchell said it “made his day”.

Okay, so I am not an advocate of gambling, but the glitz and glamour is kinda cool so I wanted to get a picture of Anthony and Mitchell entering the casino. I was quickly shut down by the security guard however and sent on my way. Finally the two 21 year olds were carded and as the 3 guys entered the casino, Katrina and I dejectedly went on our sorrowful way…Yeah! Actually, we had a nice little time; first we visited the upstairs game room for kids. Truthfully we were really shocked at what was available for the kids. I really feel like a casino is NO place for little ones. Take them to their own place, but don’t subject them to casino’s when they are that tiny! Off the soap-box and over to the little café where we snacked out while having a wonderful visit. It was really the first opportunity Katrina and I had to really get to know each other and I for one am glad we had it!

Charlie was the first to return having given the remainder of his money to Anthony. Anthony came along next to let us know that Mitchell had “almost” won $250.00. Close don’t count except in horse-shoes son! Soon Mitchell came along having lost the funds he had intended to gamble. I breathed a sigh of relief for although I hated to have them lose their money I surely did not want beginners luck to kick in and bring to life new born gamblers!

Lady Garmin was NOT as helpful on the return trip. We had already crossed the Mississippi to get to the casino and for whatever reason the GPS was determined to bring us back across the river to come home. We fought it for a time and then finally not wanting to spend the night in that area, we opted to follow the designated route. The route which brought us back across Mississippi River via the Crescent City Connection, across New Orleans headed west where we again crossed the Mississippi via the Hale Boggs Bridge in Lulling then finally back to Houma. All’s well that ends well but I knew then and there that before we headed back to New Orleans for our planned Friday trip, I would have to straighten out the Lady!

We attempted to eat at Boudreaux & Thibodaux’s (a popular and famous restaurant in Houma) upon our return to town however as we pulled in they were closing. We decided on I-Hop as it was after all Anthony’s birthday and he had been suffering from an insatiable craving for eggs. The day had been long and I know we were all tired but I do not think we were being overly critical of the obnoxious group seated next to us. This was a large group of a dozen or more young people recently graduated from high school from the sound of the conversation that we were privy to whether or not we chose to be. They were very loud and when one of their party told the others to tone it down a bit to keep from disturbing the other patrons he was told by his buddy that “they (meaning us) were not paying their bill. I really think that restaurants need to pay more attention to the behavior of their guests and not be concerned about insulting anyone by asking them to leave. Not saying anything leaves the rest of the guests in the restaurant insulted instead. Who would you prefer to offend, the offensive ones or the ones who enjoy their meal without disturbing others?

Again, off the soap-box and onward to home where we all fell asleep without a lullaby!

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-07-24T17:14:24Z</dcterms:modified>

Great Louisiana Adventure Part 2

July 9, 2008

No plans for the day – just a leisurely day at home. I put on a crock-pot of chili when I got up and that was the intended high-point of the day. Anthony’s visit home can never be complete without a big dose of my home-made chili. We at it complete with all the fixings of Frito’s, sour cream, shredded cheese and of course Tabasco sauce! A raucous game of Washington Monopoly (my souvenir gift from Anthony’s Close Up Trip to Washington for the Presidential Inauguration), we won’t say who win or lost but suffice it to say that woman are better money managers than men – sometimes that is!

July 10, 2008 http://usmarinemama.spaces.live.com/photos/cns!87AB16D5179E5E4F!6956/

So this day HAD to start early as we were destined for Blue Bayou / Dixie Landin. My niece Shannon and her good friend Renee met us at our house at 8:30. We left promptly but stopped 10 minutes later – the call of the food was too strong and Waffle House was just too tempting. Course, I will regret that decision for quite awhile for we walked into sheer chaos. Everything that happened seemed staged for a TV sitcom; complete with ditzy waitresses, missing food, total confusion. The food was very good though and for entertainment purposes they earned a good grade – I’m just glad we were not on a tight time-line!

The food thing done, we headed out to Baton Rouge with the trip for the most part quite uneventful. Shannon and Renee dutifully turned in their coke cans for their $5.00 discount and paid for their entrance. But confusion then arose as they admitted Anthony at no charge but charged for four additional people. I’m not a math genius but hey it was easy to see there were not five people in our group. It got really confusing when they had to issue credit for then they had to figure out how to credit the credit for the coke cans! All’s well that ends well however and we entered without further ado.

We wandered for just a bit before the young people decided on their ride of choice. Unfortunately just as we lined up the rain started and we had a short 20 minute delay before the rides opened again. Understand, I was there for the “Lazy River” ride and to take pictures, I had no intention of taking me and my surgically altered head on those crazy rides! They looked like a lot of fun and in my younger days I’m sure I would have taken part, but thanks, I’ll pass now-a-days! The first ride left me gasping as I watched a man nearly drown as he lost his legs upon reaching the pool at the end of the water slide. My goodness, I was certainly praying that I didn’t have to witness any of our party in the same shape! They didn’t force me to undergo any more panic for they all handled ALL the slides quite well. Charlie and I followed them around the water park happily snapping pictures. We visited the mister at one point and walked away quite refreshed. All the riding soon left everyone hungry so we headed for one of the little food stands. Anthony and Shannon had to visit several stands begging someone to sell them some chili. Finally I was able to obtain some where I stood in line for our food and I later figured out that after all that, they failed to charge me for it!

We visited one little shop several times before the day was out, once to purchase a water resistant bag for my “stuff”; once to purchase a waterproof case for my camera, only to discover the camera didn’t fit; once to purchase souvenir shirts and finally to purchase flip-flops for Anthony. They were a bit short but they served the purpose for the walk through the amusement park.

So, are you ready for this?? Shannon rode her first roller coaster EVER – poor darling, she was looking quite green but with a determined grit of her teeth she did it! Yaaaay!!! They rode several rides including the bumper cars but finally had enough after the Ragin Cajun; it made me nauseas to watch it, I can imagine how I would have felt riding it!

Of course it was right at five when we decided to call it quits – you know that time of the day when you want to avoid the highway at all costs! We opted for some cool drinks in the shade of a display store while we waited out the rush hour traffic.

We made one wrong turn and were headed the west instead of east but the mistake was quickly rectified. We caught a rain shower as we traveled I-10 but were gifted with an awesome rain-bow that we were able to see in full the complete bow.

Seemed like a good evening to visit Boudreau & Thibodeau’s, so after getting home and changing clothes we headed that way. Katrina was such a good sport trying everything on the appetizer tray. She really liked the alligator which was surprising for although it really is quite tasty most people are put off by the thought of it. She was game for everything however and even ate her first crawfish ever…and liked it!

We stopped at Walgreens before going home as Katrina needed camera batteries. I treated them to our “old family tradition” of eating “Big Cups” on the way home from Walgreens!

Once again we were all exhausted and even the “kick” from the Big Cup chocolate was not enough to keep us up, especially knowing that our ETD for the next day was 8:00AM – Boy this vacation stuff is pretty exhausting!!

July 11, 2008 http://usmarinemama.spaces.live.com/photos/cns!87AB16D5179E5E4F!6765/

Not wanting to stop at Waffle House again for breakfast I had sausage and biscuits cooked and waiting for the gang when they rose. My sister Donna (Anthony’s Nanny), her husband Wesley and their daughter Shannon arrived just a tiny bit late. I’m sure this must have stressed Donna beyond her limits as she is NEVER late for anything. But she seemed no worse for it and we were ALL smiles as we headed out for New Orleans. My poor Charlie, much as he despises driving to the city, it was his second time in just a few days. The drive this time was “glitch-free” and we arrived with no problems anxious for our great New Orleans adventure!

Within seconds of beginning our day Wesley received a citation; he was the first but we all received them. We were ALL guilty of various offenses, not the least of which was being a pretty girl, or being with a pretty girl (or handsome guy). Check out my citation in the picture section. It was a pretty neat gimmick for raising money for meals for the needy. We all paid our fine and received New Orleans Recovery ball-caps in exchange!

We passed the front side of the Jackson Square ooohing and aaahing over all the brightly colored designs and art-work. Now remember I was in a group of 7 people to say nothing of all the other people that were around us. Who do you think the young woman in need of money targeted to beg for some money? Yep, that would be me, the one that has “sucker” written across all visible sides of my entire body!! My husband pointed out just moments after me handing her a couple of dollars that she was going into a bar on the next block. That’s okay, I am not responsible for her actions, my intent was to try to help and I pray God that one day she might remember a stranger on the street being kind to her. Perhaps in this wondrous world of miracles the memory could be her turning point.

If you ever visit the French Quarter in New Orleans you MUST eat beignets at Café du Monde. The powered sugared, fried dough-nuts are certainly not healthy but trust me; they are worth whatever few days they take off the length of your life. Katrina and I waited in the line to obtain a real café cap, a prized souvenir indeed!

And then….we hoofed it, boy did we hoof it. Around Jackson Square, passing by Tujague’s, down St. Anne street by the Presbyter, the Place d’Armes, the Voodoo Museum (I’m not scared!!). Of course a picture of Katrina under the Bourbon Street sign was a necessity, as was a picture of Shannon dancing with the pole (not the start of a new career – trust me, I’d kill her first – ha!). Of course, the sleazy shops are still there, but the hawkers and the lewdness are not apparent in the light of day, instead it is just a historic area with some really neat buildings and signs that bring a giggle. There is so very much history in the Court of Two Sisters, the Absinthe House and Galatoires. This blog would be TOO long if I tried to list everything so I’ll just make the suggestion that you make plans to visit one day – in the light of day, just my personal opinion!

So here we are in the home of the most famous food in the WORLD and just what did we eat for lunch? Krystal’s!! Ha – who would have known that hidden right there in plain site was a Krystal! That might be enough to convince my husband to return a bit more often!! It just seemed the right decision though, we were hot and tired and no one really felt like really rich food knowing we still had half a day left so we entered the Krystal. And there, we all proceeded to line up with heads in the air, mouths hanging open, gawking at the menu that hovered just near the ceiling. The very nice man behind the counter let us stand in this overly awkward way for just a moment before suggesting that we might want to look at the menu’s placed at eye level on the counter. Well sure, but that would take all the fun out of gawking, now wouldn’t it!! We ordered and went upstairs to eat – which we did with considerably relish. It’s amazing just how hungry you get when you walk, and walk, and walk…

Lunch done, we continued our hike on to Canal Street. Again, I am impressed with the clean up done since Katrina. Canal Street was underwater following the levee break and in fact quite resembled a canal. However there were no visible signs remaining that anything had happened. Our “guide” Wesley turned us at Chartres where we saw the Napoleon House, K-Paul’s and the Pharmacy Museum. And then…we saw the most adorable little dog (be SURE to look at the pic’s) sitting like a miniature person in the BEE Gallery. Martin Laborde, the artist, was there on the day we visited and he chatted with us quite easily. I am always impressed by people that are NOT impressed by themselves. Mr.Laborde was one of these people, quite down to earth and humble. His art is amazing and I fully intend to one day own something of his – just not sure what yet. Visit the web site when you can for info on his “Bodo” creation – the story of the little colorful wizard is VERY interesting. http://www.beegalleries.com/ And of course if you are ever in New Orleans do be sure to stop in and say hello to the artist AND the precious pup!

Continuing our journey we came to the back side of the Jackson Square, where at one time the artists lined the block drawing caricatures of all the tourists covered with oil – oops – that’s another song isn’t it! But yes, the artists used to fill all the spots that seem to now be filled with nothing but fortune tellers. Keep in mind that the back side of Jackson Square is the front side of the St. Louis Cathedral. I had to fight the impulse to re-enact the actions of Jesus as He over-turned the tables that surrounded the Temple. I mean, gosh – is there a reason that we need THAT many spirit mediums right there at the doors of a church? Take it somewhere else already! Okay, back off the soap-box! The musicians were a bright spot, quite talented and enjoyable to listen and watch the trombone players.

I have visited New Orleans off and on for approximately forty years. Believe it or not this trip was the very first time I actually entered the cathedral. Wow! It is immense! How amazing to imagine how many thousands, dare I guess millions have entered those doors and stopped to lift up a prayer. I know that it is actually just a building and that the people are the true “church”, but just as Jacob said, I felt the brush of angels wings and surely the presence of God is in this place!. It is truly a magnificent building that will leave the viewer in awe as your eyes travel from the enormous pipe organ to the paintings, the statues, the windows, the carvings. Truly, truly a work of art! I had a child-hood memory rise and speak when we came face to face with the “confessionals”. I can clearly remember making my “First Confession” at the age of 6. My, what terror strikes the heart of a tiny child knowing that you must enter that dark box to open your heart and lay bare your soul and conscious! My sister tells me that now confessions are done face to face, I’ve a feeling that would be easier than the remembered terror of my childhood!!

So our walk continues working gradually back towards the parking lot where we’ll deposit all our goodies before walking on to the IMAX. Katrina stepped close to me and with an anguished look in her eye whispered “I don’t do clowns!” We made a wide berth of the poor clown and I laughed inside realizing just how much like our family Katrina is, for she was not alone in her fears. Donna and Shannon both fear clowns now and always have! Just a few steps more and we found a mime. Now I can not explain to you why they adored the mime but feared the clown, but they did. We all watched a few minutes then after dropping some dollars in his bucket, gathered round him for a picture. As we started to walk away, the frozen silent mime came to life and playfully gripped by elbow. He spoke to me but a million dollars would not get me to tell you what he said for I was so startled all I could do was giggle! I was still laughing as Charlie took our picture together, it is surely a memory I’ll hold on to!!

One more sight to see before departing the immediate area was the man sitting on the sidewalk making roses. He was quite talented and produced really beautiful roses simply by folding and twisting palmetto leaves. Anthony made a quick trip to the ATM to obtain cash to pay for roses for his lady! We watched for a bit, and then walked on to the parking lot where we waited for the “love-birds” to join us. They showed up soon enough with Katrina cradling the delicate creations to her heart! Awwww, young love! And of course, once again I sent up a silent prayer thanking God for blessing us with these awesome young people!

The walk to the IMAX took us through Woldenberg Park where we snapped pictures among the mirror art display. I really want to return one day because I think there is some real potential for some really awesome shots using the reflections. We were very disappointed to discover that although we were in the middle or tourist season, the Aquarium still closed at 5PM! We had to choose between the IMAX and the Aquarium as we did not have time for both. As tired as we were, the soft seats of the IMAX won hands down! We browsed the gift shop waiting for the show to begin. Armed with popcorn and soft-drinks we picked up our 3D glasses and settled in for a showing of “Sea Monsters”, the tale of pre-historic creatures of the sea, Dolly and her babies. It was quite good and as all IMAX movies, VERY realistic with the special effects.

The movie ended just about the time 5 o’clock traffic started (didn’t this just happen yesterday?), so we headed over to the River Walk to kill some time. Wesley was still our guide and like sheep following their shepherd we followed without asking questions. All the way up the ascending ramp that wound back and forth no less than 6 times finally arriving at a place that seemed to have been set up for people to take naps??? Very strange and we never did figure it out, but we did figure out that right next to the winding ramp was a straight path that bypassed all the climbing! Ha, did we ever get a laugh out of that one!! Our walk continued over to the fountain within the plaza given to New Orleans by Spain during the Bicentennial Celebration. The circular plaza includes “Coats of Arms” from various areas, all so interesting and colorful. Katrina was quite intrigued with the pigeons that are obviously people tame and not shy at all about accepting a gift of cheese crackers. I thought she would fall over in laughter as she viewed their resulting “cheesy lips” – HA!!

So the time passed as well as did the traffic, so reluctant to end the day we headed back to our vehicles foregoing another chance at the ramp. (Shucks!) I was and am quite intrigued by a very old brick building sitting in the midst of the area. It was void of any markings or signs that would identify it, but I have added it to my “to do” list for I am ever so curious as to its origins AND its future. I did sadly note the one man sleeping in the shade of the ledge. It just tugs at my heart that in this day and age there remains the homeless population. I can’t help but think that as I look with pride at our son that at some point someone looked at this man with the same pride and love and I wonder where are they today? Long ago Donna and I would sing in harmony a melancholy song about the lonely people in the city – the words haunted me as I watched the man sleep…

Lots of hugs and kisses and we parted company from the LeBlanc’s, bound once again for Houma. We got across the river and headed home with zero difficulties. It’s a good thing and a bad thing for Charlie – good that he didn’t have the hassle and outrage over getting turned around; bad because NOW I know he can do it – what out now!! New Orleans, we’ll be back soon to finish the day!

Home again we feasted on chicken and sausage jambalaya – home made this time! The only problem with it was I didn’t fix enough! Not only am I not accustomed to cooking for four – I’m not accustomed to cooking for four RAVENOUS people! All was well however, no one went to bed with an empty stomach.

July 12, 2008

Of COURSE I woke with the sunrise, but knowing there were no big plans for the day I settled down with a cup of coffee and Fox News. We had been on such a whirlwind that I had no idea of what was going on in our extended world – there had been enough activity in my little family world to occupy all my attention. The grocery store was calling my name however so I soon headed out to pick up the fixings for a chicken stew along with a few other necessities.

My family was soon stirring but after all the running around during the week we were all looking forward to an “easy-going” day. Besides that with the temperature hovering near 100, no one felt like being too active. We played another game of Monopoly and I guess I must admit that the males dominated today, I’m sure they were just tired the other night (uh-huh!). Charlie and Katrina took a buggy ride to the store and down-town while I cooked and Anthony alternately watched TV and napped.

There was nothing spectacular about the day; just a comfy cozy stay home with your family type day. Tar Baby was in her glory having her whole family home with her!

As I drifted to sleep I too was in my glory having everyone safe and sound and under one roof. I thank God for the biggies in life, but I think I am even more thankful for all of life’s little joys!

July 13, 2008 http://usmarinemama.spaces.live.com/photos/cns!87AB16D5179E5E4F!6753/

So, I won’t be morose (I’ll try anyway – no promises) but it IS my last day with my prince and princess!!

Charlie and I have NEVER eaten the breakfast buffet at Golden Corral and Number One son decided that it was high time for us to try it. Course he and Katrina being hungry may have helped with his decision – naaaah – I’m sure he was just thinking of Dad & Mom!!

It may have been the first time, but let me promise you, it won’t be the last – that is an AWESOME breakfast buffet!! Quite dangerous as well – a person could literally eat themselves into morbid obesity! Kidding, but we certainly did enjoy it. We ran into one of Anthony’s neighborhood buddies at the cash register who informed us that he would be entering the Coast Guard. It is amazing to me that in a subdivision that consists of only three streets we have so very many young people in the military. Must be something in the water – oops I better watch out – those conspiracy theorists will have a hey-day with my blog!!

During breakfast I offered Anthony & Katrina the options of 1.A tour through a walk able swamp; 2.A trip to Grand Isle for boiled peanuts and the sights; 3. Hang out with friends 4. Hang out at home and rest up for their next day journey. It was a split decision for a bit until we figured out that Mitch would be working most of the day.

We headed down to Grand Isle after completing a few errands and a few “good-byes”. Bridge-side Marine had their boiled peanuts ready and waiting – good thing because I had not called ahead and I know one young lady who would have been quite disappointed! Katrina got a sticker that made her a “Registered Coon-Ass” (aka RCA) – don’t take offense, there is a long story behind the local term. We sat on the upstairs balcony and devoured two large containers of boiled peanuts savoring the salty spiciness.

From there we drove to the butterfly dome where once again there were no butterflies – gotta figure that out – I have tons at home! The flowers were blooming and quite pretty so it was not wasted time, twas a good photo op.

I was a bit disappointed in the attitude of the attendant at the Grand Isle State Park. Always before the personnel have been so accommodating and friendly so the sour demeanor of the young woman at the counter was a bit distressing. We went ahead and paid the $4.00 ($1.00 per person) so that we could check the progress of the beach repairs. It was at that time that everything started going down-hill!

I KNOW the repair is/was necessary, but how very heart-breaking to see the work-in-progress. The flowers and vegetation that had been so full and colorful during our last trip was for the most part gone. No sea-birds in sight, no sounds of song-birds. With the sun parching everything like a desert, the heat was visible in trembling waves rising from the sand. I truly felt violated as I looked in vain for the verdant surroundings I was accustomed to and it sure hurt when I didn’t find them!

We left the area with my heart in my throat. Here I was in one of my favorite places with some of my most loved people. My “place” looked as though it had been forcibly raped and the people I’d wanted to share it with would be leaving the next day. The tears didn’t take very long at all to start, but they took 24 hours to stop!!!

To top it all off, I called Big Al’s to check the availability of boiled crawfish, only to be told there were NONE! So, went our last day with the prince and princess! Anthony tried his best to cheer me up by assuring me that he would be indeed like to eat the roast I had cooking (just in case – crawfish are very iffy this time of year). But his attempts only brought more tears to the surface. Poor darling, I’m sure he had NO idea what was going on and why every time he spoke I would cry! There were just too many emotions hitting at one time!

I did manage to put together a respectable somewhat scrumptious supper of roast beef with gravy, mash potato’s, buttered corn and rolls, so the day was not a total loss. We watched TV for a bit before Anthony & Katrina went to have one last visit with friends. I fell asleep, but woke suddenly at 10:24 (not sure why, but that time stuck with me) realizing again just how out of practice I was when it came to “not worrying”. I again tossed and turned until I heard that key in the door at 1:30, then I lifted up a prayer of gratitude and went to sleep knowing the alarm clock would go off in just a few short hours.

July 14, 2008

The alarm clock that should have sounded to wake me did not – apparently I had it set to radio, but the volume of the radio was turned down. My internal alarm clock did not fail me totally though for I woke on my own at 5:30. Trying to act as though everything was normal I dressed, prepared Tar Baby’s food, at my yogurt while absorbing my daily reading of the Bible, then took Charlie his coffee all the while trying very hard to avoid the fact that very shortly I would be bidding two loved ones good-bye.

Charlie tried to convince me to call in to the office letting them know I’d be late, but no way, Jose was I going to do that. At least this way, it would be me leaving them not watching them drive away!

And so I woke the sleeping beauty just enough to hug her and tell her I loved her. Then I went to the next room to get a bear hug from Number One who woke enough to say I love you.

Then I drove away…in tears, but driving none-the-less!

The phone rang that night at 10:30 – they were calling to say they were a half-hour from their destination and wanted to call before it was too late. I lifted up a prayer of thanksgiving for their safe return, and drifted back to sleep dreaming of our most amazing wonderful week, our great Louisiana Adventure!

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-07-24T17:13:14Z</dcterms:modified>

Honey Island Swamp Creature

For any of my Yopp relatives that might be interested - there is an organization called "Friends of the Yopp Meeting House" that you can join to support and assist in the ongoing repairs to the historical building and property. I have the form for anyone who might be interested.

The following is information I copied off of the OvaYonda Web Site: http://www.ovayonda.com/areahistory/yopps_meeting_house.htm

The parcel of property where Yopp’s Meeting House is located today was granted and conveyed on October 27, 1813. It is believed that the original meeting house was built of logs and was established for the use of all denominations. Each denomination had a designated day of the month to hold meetings. Some slaves even attended services with their owners. With permission of his/her owner, a slave could join the church and many did. A separate section of land, currently occupied by the Little Zion AME Zion Church on Sneads Ferry Road, and still tended by black residents of Sneads Ferry, was set aside for their graves.

The Yopp’s Primitive Baptist Church was instituted August 8, 1835, with 33 charter members. For the next 64 years, both races and a number of denominations would continue to meet there.

In the spring term of Superior Court in 1877, a judge would hear conflicting stories regarding ownership of the meeting house. It seems the Primitive Baptist had locked the doors and refused entrance to other denominations, claiming they were not contributing their fair share of the upkeep. The primitive Baptist were the obvious victors.

The original building is reported to have burned, although, at this time we are still unable to determine the date of the fire. Many older residents of the area remember stories being told about a fire and other events concerning the church. One such story tells of a member of the church being put out because he was insane. His insanity was evidenced by the fact that he chose to go boar hunting instead of attending Sunday meeting.

The present building has been dated around 1892 by state archives and is built in the Primitive Baptist fashion with separate doors for men and women and in years past the sexes were seated separately. Pete Sandbeck, restoration specialist for the North Carolina State Department of Cultural Resources, has visited the church and agrees that it was built around 1890. “The pews are original. They are very sparse and lean, but they were never meant to be comfortable. The framing timbers are hand hewn. The log pier foundation of heart pine is remarkably sound and the support beams under the church were pit sawn, a grueling technique that pre-dates the Civil War.” The country gothic type vents are noted over the doors.

Since the Primitive Baptist stopped having services there about 1980, the building has once again been used by other denominations and the boy scouts and cub scouts.

Because of neglect, age and storm damages the building now needs many repairs before it becomes the museum and historical site we are striving to accomplish.

Later! God Bless!

Go to a beach camp ground in the middle of winter when the temp is in the low 50's and there are gale force winds blowing with flooding rain! When you find yourself completely alone on the entire beach it is so easy to imagine how Adam and Eve must have felt as they searched for their creator God! It was truly an amazing eye-opening week-end.

More details later!!

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-01-27T22:07:38Z</dcterms:modified>

Ferguson's Great California Adventure - July 2007

So, when your only son is a United States Marine, you get to travel to unusual places to visit him. We had a wonderful vacation with him over the 4th of July holiday this past summer. You can find a full photo album of pictures, but if you want a slide show complete with Melissa Etheridge, Tom Russel and even a bit of Chuck Berry, visit my YouTube web site at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogscwJQw6tA

Hope you enjoy it!

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-10-22T00:05:32Z</dcterms:modified>
